How do you find your ideal Surgical Assistant Program? First, define your standards.

If you don’t become an educated consumer, you could graduate without the training you needed for success. Complete the Program Locator Questionnaire and then you can identify a program that meets your specific needs. But you don’t need a test to identify 6 standards of proper training you have to demand or you’ll be spinning your wheels and wasting your time, energy, and money.

Standard #1: CAAHEP accreditation

If a program is not CAAHEP accredited, you risk enrolling in a diploma mill and ending up unprepared and ineligible for the CFA and/or SA-C exams. You can find accredited programs by going to CAAHEP and selecting Surgical Assistant. You may find a local program. But not all CAAHEP programs are equal. Maybe the local program doesn’t have everything you need. An out-of-state distance-learning program may be a better option. So here are some more standards to look for…

Standard #2: Fully online distance-learning

Some schools say ‘online’ when their programs are email. You want your program to be fully online (web-based) so everything is available automatically, when YOU need it. Learn around your schedule instead of waiting for email or snail mail assignments. Course materials can be accessed online from your secure, personalized webpage. Web-based technology can tremendously enhance your learning experience and make it easier even if you are new to the web.

Standard #3: Personal attention from staff and faculty

Program instructions should be easy to understand, self-explanatory. But make sure you still get unlimited personal attention from staff and faculty. You’ll get a good sense about your access and how responsive they are to your needs by: 1) Promises made in the program literature; 2) How much they help you even before you enroll; and 3) How quickly your phone calls are returned, if at all.

Standard #4: Extensive hands-on training

Dan Bump is a Surgical Assistant out of Denver, Colorado and he has been helping Surgical Techs, OR Nurses, and others develop into highly skilled Surgical Assistants for 20 years. In fact, he is the architect of the 6 day model for developing usable expertise. You can learn more at About Dan Bump.

Other programs copied Mr. Bump’s 6 day model but they couldn’t duplicate his results because of the talent, expertise, experience, and cost necessary. So now many of them offer only minimum hands-on and/or make it completely optional.

Obviously, these programs don’t see hands-on as essential. That way of thinking does not result in effective training and any hands-on they do offer is questionable. Be cautious! They may just go through the motions of hands-on training so they can build it up in their advertisements to lure students who want skills.

Look for at least 6 days of skills training so you’ll have sufficient time and one-on-one feedback to develop surgery-ready wound closure and advanced surgical skills. Learning while doing surgery simulations gives you ‘skills in context.’ You won’t be left guessing where and when to apply a skill. This learning shows – IN YOU! Skin closure may be all your patient sees but your surgeon sees how you perform and contribute – DURING the procedure.

The last thing you want after you take a program is for your surgeon to stop in the middle of a procedure, look at you and say, “I thought you said you were trained? Here, just hold this retractor.”

Your Checklist

For Proper Training

  CAAHEP Accreditation.

  Web-based online training.

Personal attention from staff and faculty.

At least 6 days of extensive hands-on training.

Instructors and program developers with extensive assisting experience and free-lance success.

Can retake the hands-on training as many times as you want, at no extra charge.

Higher-learning, custom-izable clinical internship with your own surgeons, at your own hospital.

Standard #5: Strong promise that you

can master surgical skills

Surgical skills or the lack of them can make or break your career. You want to know you’ll come away from your hands-on training able to perform like a seasoned expert. Here are 3 things to look for:

  • At least 6 fully days of hands-on training.
  • An instructor with impressive talent, expertise, and experience. (Check the bios of both the instructor and the program developer.)
  • Retake the hands-on as many times as you want with no limitations, no conditions, no questions asked, no waiting until you graduate, and no extra cost? (Get it in writing.)

Standard #6: Higher-learning clinical internship

The right 6 days of hands-on training can turn an ordinary clinical internship into a fascinating, transforming, higher-learning experience. Since they won’t have to waste time teaching you basics, your surgeons will show you the more advanced techniques and share trade-secrets that made them successful.

Look for convenience and a wide variety of cases in at least 2 specialties. You should first assist on at least 135 cases and have the ability to customize your experience around available cases you can do with YOUR surgeons and at YOUR hospital.

Transform your surgical career

with the ACESA Surgical Assistant Program!

A program with all 6 standards could transform your skills, boost your job satisfaction, and prepare you for an income you thought you'd have to go to medical school to earn. How long will you wait to sign up?

As you read each word on this webpage, you’re going to discover your ‘light at the end of the tunnel.’ Each paragraph, each bullet uncovers fresh, new insights on your hidden potential and how you can tap into it.

When you first assist, are you happy you’re limited to holding retractors, suctioning, and cutting suture? Does it feel right to be put on the op report as a second scrub and be deprived of recognition? Are you satisfied to first assist but only get scrub pay? Take 2 simple actions and all this changes.

1) You have a good attitude about being helpful. Take it to the next level and, with mission-like zeal, do whatever it takes to master surgical skills and techniques that are helpful to your surgeons. Without doing anything else, this alone will make you stand out to your surgeons.

2) The second key is 'proper training.' It takes a unique program to give you expert-level results. Most programs are entry-level and don't even try! So ask yourself, do you want to perform at entry-level, get labeled as a beginner, and be limited to holding retractors? Or do you want to assist using the same skills as surgeons who first assist? Your answer should tell you what kind of a program is right for you.

Full of new skills.

I am thrilled!

"I was extremely tired after the first day - mentally! I was pleased with the curriculum from the first day and the rest of the week proved to be just as full of new skills and knowledge. I am walk-ing away with more knowledge than I imagined I would gain in a 6-day period. Your teaching methods are wonderful. I am feeling empowered - by the knowledge you have given me during this lab. I am very enthusiastic about the next phase of this program as I know I am going to gain knowledge and increase my skill level exponent-ially.

I am thrilled at where that will lead me professionally. The SA role will be new to our area and I look forward to the opportunity of raising the level of expertise for myself as well as my peers. I will whole-heartedly recommend your program to all wishing to expand their educational and professional possibilities."

Jennifer Nelson,

The program is enjoyable and challenging.

“This experience has been enjoy-able and challenging. The step-by-step skills lab and the anatomy lectures are worth the cost alone.”

Makes me stand out as an expert.

“ACESA is very well organized. I feel that they concentrated on the skills that would best make me an excellent SA-C. On the third day, as well as the towards the end of the second, I really started to feel my skills and knowledge coming together. It was very exciting. My main benefit, other than the obvious suturing & tying skills, was the 'small things' that will make me stand out as an expert in my surgeons' minds.

The SkillLab will be of great benefit to anyone in the surgical field. I feel that the lab, as well as the curriculum, will help me to achieve my goals as an independent SA-C. Dan brings knowledge and skills that are little known but easily reproduced. His teaching style is outstanding and I feel that I will become much more desirable than some of my colleagues who do not have this formal training.”

Raylan Smith, CST

The rewards

can be unlimited.

"ACESA is in a word excellent! The personal, one-on-one training helps keep your goals in reach. This program is a life-changing experience. The training is very user-friendly and provides ex-cellent resources. The work can be challenging but there is a strong network of support to help. The knowledge is exceptional and the rewards can be unlimited. If you are looking for excellent surgical skills and financial free-dom, I highly recommend this program."

This program

changed my life!

"ACESA is a great company! I recommend it 100% to every-body. My experience was wonder-ful. Now I know how to tie and close wounds using different techniques. I am very happy. I am ready to assist. This program changed my life! Thank you very much for everything. This is the best program."

Learn 'The Expert Way'

assisting skills in just 6 days.

Do you ever feel like an amateur when you first assist? Now imagine the opposite – standing across from the surgeon, clamping and ligating pedicles, dissecting tissues, and cauterizing bleeders at your surgeon’s direction. When the surgery is over, you close the wound and free up your surgeon to write orders and see the next patient. Does that sound more like it or do you prefer spending your days endlessly cutting suture, suctioning, and holding retractors?

At ACESA we have the expertise and experience you’ve been looking for in the Surgical SkillLab, The Expert Way (included in our Surgical Assistant Program). Your pursuit of expertise is an amazing 6 day process developed by Dan Bump, the father of Surgical Assistant training. Simulation training is a long-recognized approach for reaching expertise in the shortest period of time. It has been used for many years in aviation and for training NASA astronauts. Simulation is fast growing into the preferred way of training surgeons and other medical professionals.

This 6 day process focuses on learning skills and assisting behaviors ‘in context,’ during surgical simulations and by observation and repetition. You also get one-on-one feedback from an expert in the field (Dan Bump or someone he personally selected and trained for you). This experience is electrifying. You not only get new skills, you make them part of you. You learn to apply your new skill set by second nature. Learn more by clicking Surgical SkillLab, The Expert Way.

Clinical internship takes your expertise to an even higher level.

In many programs, the brunt of skills training is pushed off onto your surgeons. This can really backfire on YOU. First, your surgeons may get mad because they were under the impression you went to school for skills. And second, your surgeons will have to spend so much time coaching you through basics, they won’t have the time or inclination to teach you advanced technique.

On paper, the ACESA clinical internship looks a lot like other programs. However because of your advanced skills training, you enter your clinicals with significant skills and expertise. That changes your clinicals into a higher-learning experience! You don’t lose opportunities to apply your skills because of making amateur mistakes. Instead, you perform in a way that builds surgeon trust. Now what will they teach you? The only thing left is the more advanced surgical techniques and the secrets and tricks-of-the-trade they’ve learned that makes their cases go smoothly, helps them overcome challenges, and gets them more desirable outcomes.

Virtual classroom learning

that delivers.

Studying from textbooks in any Surgical Assistant Program is the part most adult learners find the least fun when compared to hands-on training or a higher-learning clinical experience. But ACESA goes the distance by making it a more engaging learning process. Students readily see how it contributes to their success. It’s not just a chore they have to complete so they can graduate.

In developing the online curriculum, Dan Bump had to keep in mind 3 crucial factors:

  • The curriculum must cover all areas of the Core Curriculum For Surgical Assisting so the program could receive CAAHEP accreditation. Graduates would then be eligible and well-prepared for national Surgical Assistant certifying exams.
  • Students will be replacing surgeons in the first assisting position. This factor means a much higher level of knowledge is required than most programs provide.
  • What did Dan have to learn to achieve success? If the curriculum is to prepare graduates for high-level success, it must be saturated with success-based learning.

So what do you get with ACESA online training? You get a lot but the 2 subjects that shape your career most are 1) surgical anatomy and 2) surgical technique and procedure.

Surgical Anatomy: Of course you’ve most likely had anatomy classes before you started working in the operating room. If not, you need to take some courses before you can qualify to enroll in the ACESA Surgical Assistant Program (To learn more, go to Basic OR Sciences). We make these courses easy with distance-learning.

Remember, you are replacing another surgeon in the procedure. Do you think the attending surgeon will ever rely on you to help identify anatomical structures for a safe procedure? You bet! Will you ever have to keep your surgeon out of trouble because the anatomy is different or a little disorienting? Yes you will. Will you ever have to perform a surgical technique under your surgeon’s direction? It depends on how much they trust you. You earn his trust in a powerful way with clinical application of anatomy.

As a scrub, surgical anatomy is background knowledge. When you are a Surgical Assistant, ANATOMY IS YOUR JOB! You need a deeper and different understanding of anatomy so you can make incisions, close wounds, or retract, manipulate, and alter the anatomy. Without this specialized knowledge, it’s not safe for you to first assist.

Surgical Procedure: As the scrub person, you need a level of procedure knowledge that will help you anticipate the surgeon’s need for surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies. As the Surgical Assistant, you need more advanced procedure knowledge to help you anticipate the flow and application of surgical techniques. Then you will be able to better figure out what you need to do to make the procedure flow smooth and safe.

You need to know the procedure on the same level as the surgeon. But how? By using the same books surgeons use to learn procedures and techniques. Over the years, ACESA has developed significant expertise at taking you from your current level of knowledge, building on it, and smoothly moving you to the advanced anatomy and procedure knowledge.

Our students soon find what they learn is very interesting, they sense their knowledge base growing, and they intuitively grasp that advanced knowledge will take them to new heights in their career.

Escape the rat race! Stop working 50 or 60 hours every week and taking extra call just to get by.

If you want more on the kind of success you can and should enjoy, you’ve really got to read more about our founder at About Dan Bump. He went from scrubbing 50-60 hours/week, taking everyone’s call, and just scraping by – and went to 20 hours/week and 3 times the money.

As a freelance Surgical Assistant Dan made $105,000/year! He is a role model and inspiration for his students and others who want to pursue a successful career. Just think what Dan could have done if he worked full-time. He decided on part-time so he’d be free to teach.

Dan has helped some of his graduates make over $300,000/year! How? Well for one thing, he is not bashful about sharing his success secrets. So when his protégés use those secrets, work full-time, and seek out more lucrative cases to assist on, the results are explosive!

If you work 60 hours/week, you should be getting ahead - not just getting by. We teach you what it takes to:

  • Make more money!
  • Earn the respect and trust of your surgeons and peers!
  • Elevate your status in surgery!
  • Get a front row seat to the surgical action!
  • First assist like surgeons do!
  • Eliminate the risk of working out of your scope of practice!

Will your employer pay for

your training and give you a raise?

We can't force them to. But once administration truly sees how they benefit from your training, they'll jump at the chance to get behind you 100%!

I loved the in-dividual attention the students got with the instructor and the simulators. The speaker really cared about us learning and our futures. I mostly valued the hands-on where you get a good understanding of the surgeon’s perspective. Also, the anatomy classes so when you are assisting, you know what is going on. I am so grateful to Dan Bump and ACESA for this training. I recommend this class to both non-certified and certified techs.”

ACESA training transforms you into a revenue generator.
  • A well-trained first assistant can generate $200,000+ a year.
  • You solve your employer's liability problem. Training reduces surgical risk and liability.
  • The Joint Commission looks for proper training for roles you play in surgery, including first assisting. Training protects your hospital’s accreditation status.
  • The Director of Surgical Services, OR Manager, Risk Manager, and Hospital CEO all benefit from your training.
  • Administration already funds education with little or no direct benefit to the hospital. This program is easy on the budget and everybody benefits.
  • Surgeons are happier with skilled assistants they can trust.
  • A skilled and credentialed assisting staff is an effective surgeon recruiting incentive.
  • Increase OR utilization! Assistants can generate revenue with assistant billing, but that’s nothing compared to the bottom-line boost the hospital gets when more surgeons bring in more patients!

How 6 ACESA trade secrets

demolish barriers to your success.

Only the Surgical SkillLab, 6 Days To Expertise gives you 6 core secrets to make you perform like an expert even if you never assisted before. (Find out more about the lab by clicking Surgical SkillLab, The Expert Way).

  • Core Secret 5:  Makes the surgery flow smooth as silk. Your surgeons will reschedule their cases to work with you!
  • Core Secret 6:  Helps you perform under intense pressure with the composure of a master!

  • If we priced the ACESA program by how much our graduates are making, we could easily charge $25,000 to $30,000. Many basic surgical tech programs cost over $20,000. Since affordability is our guiding policy, we keep our tuition as low as possible without sacrificing quality – $4,995.
  • Easy financing available with monthly payments as low as $99.

Develop significant expertise!

"I feel it to be an honor to be associated with Dan Bump and ACESA.  I have known and worked closely with Dan since 1989 and have great respect for his knowledge and skills.  He has always provided me with the excellence in surgical assisting that I have needed and has shown the patience to be able to effectively transmit his experience to others.  It is this quality that makes Dan uniquely able to provide a most worthwhile learning experience for surgical assistant students.

From a surgeon’s perspective, an assistant needs to provide more than simple tissue retraction.  The assistant should properly be a reflection of the experience and judgment of the surgeon.  Education gained through an ACESA course will provide the self-assurance which will be well recognized by patients and surgeons alike.  Surgeons do not want to begin a surgical procedure with inexperienced assistants and cannot be expected to provide education themselves when the assistants do not have the background to assist with knowledge and efficiency.  ACESA will provide this background.

Dan Bump’s ability to provide a respected educational program is known throughout the country.  His track record is undisputed and ACESA will be the beneficiary of this experience.

I feel that the Skill labs developed by Dan and ACESA will produce a hands-on experience which will enable the prospective assistant to develop significant expertise.  This will enable the assistant to gain the confidence of the surgeon and thereby enable the assistant’s career to flourish."

“Dan Bump is a teacher by nature. He is amazingly patient and obviously enjoys coaching his students. He shares the joy and excitement of achievement. The one-on-one coaching is fantastic! This course is invaluable. Intensive, thorough, fun, informative – it’s the whole package! I learned a lot and had a great time doing it. I feel confident that I will be able to perform in the OR at the level required. The entire course stands out as a fantastic experience. I strongly recommend this program. Thank you very much!”

“ACESA is dedicated to educating and training the best Surgical Assistants possible. The one-on-one training and individual attention was particularly a good experience for me. Dan’s genuine interest in seeing us become ‘polished professionals’ was appreciated. Learning what’s expected of me as a Surgical Assistant was very valuable to me. I now have a completely different view of my responsibilities. I recommend this program to anyone who has an interest in improving their surgical skills. I have learned more in this class than I ever did in Surgical Technologist School about the surgical procedure. This is the ‘next step’ for any medical professional who wants to advance their career.”

“I strongly recommend this program. It is very professional. You get vast knowledge in anatomy, physiology, surgical technique, suturing & tying, and patient safety. This program will really sharpen your skills no matter where you are in your career, whether you are just starting or a seasoned veteran. You will definitely learn something with ACESA.”

“ACESA seems like a very friendly company, concerned more about your success than money in their pocket. I enjoyed the hands-on simulators. They worked to show you how to do something instead of just telling you how. Before coming to the ACESA surgical lab, a doctor tried to teach me how to tie and I just didn’t get it. Now I can go back to work with my new skills and blow the doctors out of the water. ACESA was a great learning experience that combined my skills with brand new skills to make me the best Surgical Assistant I can be. Through hands-on training, ACESA created a very conducive learning environment. The small groups also made the experience fun and exciting as well as educational.”

Melissa Whitman, ST

“I feel that ACESA has set high standards for itself as a company. I think the company has established an excellent formula for success in the SA field. The 6-day skills lab was an excellent experience for me. The wealth of new knowledge and skills that I came away with are well worth the cost of the lab. My surgical assist skills have increased tremendously. I can’t wait to use them! I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to increase their level of skill and performance in the OR environment. Besides learning new skills, confidence is instilled to be able to use those skills.”

"Dan, I just want to let you know what a blessing this course has been for me. I went to Chicago to take my boards in September and the respect I got when I returned was almost instantaneous. I opted not to go to Jacksonville but joined up with a couple of Surgical Assistants in my area and we currently have 19 surgeons on contract – so life is very busy! Soon we’ll be looking to bring more SA’s on board so that we can satisfy more clients. I recommend your course to every Surgical Tech or OR Nurse who asks me about what I do. Keep up the good work. I’m sure you’ll have more people from my area coming your way."

Drew Burnett, SA-C, Consultant to Orthopedic Surgery

"Surgical First Assisting is a tremendous opportunity for Advanced Practice Nurses (APN) to expand their Scope of Practice. It is becoming a trend that state Boards of Nursing (sBON) require 'formal training' for APN's expansion of practice scope beyond one’s scholastic curriculum.   The ACESA program adequately documents 'formal training' required by some sBON's as well as preparing one for the certifying exam. I highly recommend ACESA's surgical first assisting program. It was a terrific education that helped establish a solid foundation of surgical anatomy, suturing, knot-tying techniques, and other tasks required for competence in surgical first assisting. The program also helped me recognize the 'expansion of opportunities' available to Certified NP Surgical First Assistants."

"An excellent resource for both theory and practical skills on wound closure and first assisting in surgery. I am most happy with the specific interest and encouragement the instructors and course facilitators accord the students. I feel this course is appropriate not only for first assistants in surgery but should also be availed to students in medical school during their surgical rotation and to residents who are going through their first year surgical rotations. It will definitely enhance their wound closing skills."
