What is a Surgical Assistant?
The main role of a surgical assistant, a.k.a. first assistant, is to aid the surgeon during an operation. Their duties may include, but is not limited to, correctly positioning the patient, draping the operative site, providing exposure and hemostasis, ligating vascular pedicles, closing wounds, and even performing surgical techniques under the surgeons direction as the specific surgical procedure and surgeon demands it for the safe and smooth progress of the surgery. Proper first assist training can ensure that the surgeon assistant is not limited to lower level assisting duties such as holding retractors, suctioning, and cutting suture.

“The experience has been enjoyable and challenging with ample time to practice new skills. You gain a new appreciation for all aspects of a surgery. Actually performing a procedure from a surgeon’s standpoint gives you a new and wonderful viewpoint. I am more comfortable at working with both hands now than before the skills lab. I was predominantly one handed and discovered I can actually use my non-dominant hand. If you love surgery and want to increase your skills, as well as your knowledge base, then take this course. The step-by-step skills lab and the anatomy lectures are worth the cost alone.“
