Are you a Hero?

I was reflecting the other day, preparing to write this article about heroes in our society, and I found myself overwhelmed by just how many there are. Heroes are everywhere – among firefighters, police officers, military personnel, and even ordinary people we encounter every day. But who are these everyday heroes?
I realized I know quite a few of them. Not because I’m surrounded by firefighters, soldiers, or first responders, but because I know people like you.
You probably don’t think of yourself as a hero – most heroes don’t. You show up, do your job, and make a difference without expecting applause. There’s no parade in your honor, no bronze statue in the plaza, and no Presidential Medal of Freedom hanging around your neck.
But this isn’t about what you don’t get. It’s about what you do. You deserve to be recognized, and today, I want to honor you by celebrating the ways you show up as a hero every single day. You may not see it, but the impact you make is real – and it’s worth acknowledging.
So, How Are You A Hero?
I fully realize you are a hero, so I want to make this article your tribute – your parade, your statue, your award. We are so proud of our ACE alumni. Let me help you fully realize that you are a hero by counting the ways:
#1 To Your Family
Your impact reaches far beyond the operating room, touching the lives of those you love in powerful and inspiring ways.
First, you often work long hours in high-pressure environments, but your dedication ensures financial stability and security for your family. You even went the extra mile and enrolled in the ACE Surgical Assistant Program so you could make even more money.
Beyond financial stability and security, you are a role model to your family of strength and resilience, hard work and dedication, building and accomplishing your dreams, and making sacrifices for a better future.
#2 To Your Patients
You are a hero to your patients in every sense of the word. Your skill, knowledge, and compassion make life-changing and life-saving differences.
You are a guardian of patient safety. Your skilled hands ensure every step of the procedure runs smoothly. Your vigilance and attention to detail safeguard the patient’s well-being when it matters most.
#3 To Your Surgeons
Surgeons become addicted to their favorite assistants. Why? You make the surgeon look good. You facilitate their work. To the extent you are a good facilitator, you make the surgeon look more competent.
I met a surgeon once who told me that a mediocre assistant will make an excellent surgeon look mediocre. On the other hand, an excellent assistant will make a mediocre surgeon look excellent. That is a lot of influence you have over how well a procedure goes.
#4 To Your Peers
Surgical Assistants play a vital role in uplifting their peers. Whether working alongside fellow Surgical Assistants, Nurses, or Surgical Technologists, you lead by example and help create a cohesive, high-performing surgical team. Here’s how Surgical Assistants are heroes to their peers:
Not only do you first assist, but you also have a role as a mentor and teacher. As a team player, you collaborate, you are reliable, and your willingness to help make you indispensable to your peers.
#5 To Your Hospital
Surgical Assistants are the unsung heroes who help keep hospitals running efficiently, safely, and successfully. Your contributions extend far beyond the operating room, impacting the hospital’s reputation, performance, and patient outcomes.
Hospital administrators are also concerned about their liability. You assist the hospital with this by making sure you are well trained and certified for your role. You manage risks by helping the surgeon avoid surgical errors. You make it your business to look out for the patient’s safety. And, since you are so close to the procedure, you play a direct role in achieving positive patient outcomes.
Your skill in handling tissue, wound closure, and hemostasis lead to faster recoveries, fewer infections, and higher patient satisfaction – metrics that influence hospital ratings and funding.
Surgical Assistants don’t just support hospitals – they strengthen them. From boosting efficiency to safeguarding patient outcomes, your work ensures hospitals operate smoothly and maintain their reputation for excellence.
#6 To Your Profession
Surgical Assistants are not only practitioners but also advocates, innovators, and mentors who shape the future of their profession. In your everyday practice, you elevate the standards of care, and you advocate for recognition and growth.
You mentor the next generation of Surgical Assistants, promote awareness of the profession, embrace technological changes, and advocate for Surgeon-Level formal and continuing education.
You are more than a skilled professional – you are the heart of your profession, driving it forward through dedication, mentorship, and advocacy. You inspire others to rise to the same level of excellence, ensuring that your impact is felt not just today, but for generations to come.
What’s the Reward for Heroism?
Heroism isn’t always met with the recognition it deserves. You are likely an unsung hero. There may be no parades, no statues in your honor, and no medals pinned to your chest. But being a Surgical Assistant comes with rewards that run far deeper than public accolades.
First, there’s the financial reward. Hospitals often recognize the value of a trained and certified Surgical Assistant with raises – anywhere from $2 to $20 per hour. That is a meaningful step up in income for doing work that truly matters.
But the greatest financial rewards? Those come when you reward yourself. Surgical Assistants have the unique ability to start their own private practices and bill the patients’ insurance carrier directly for their services. Many self-employed Surgical Assistants earn low to mid 6-figure incomes – transforming their careers and their lives. At ACE, we stand ready to assist you when you decide to take that step to build a thriving business of your own.
Yet, the rewards go beyond money. Imagine the personal pride you’ll feel as you reflect on how far you’ve come. You’re doing things in surgery you once thought only surgeons could do – and earn the kind of income you once thought only surgeons could make. That’s no small achievement. It’s something to celebrate.
And perhaps the most meaningful reward of all? Status and respect. As a well-trained and certified Surgical Assistant, you’ll gain the admiration of your colleagues, patients, and peers. You’ll be seen not just as a skilled professional but as an everyday hero – someone who saves lives, supports surgeons, and makes a real difference.
A Hero’s Call to Action
Heroes don’t wait for permission to rise – they answer the call. Whether you’re just beginning your journey as a Surgical Assistant or you’re ready to take the next step toward independence and financial freedom, know this: the world needs your skill, your dedication, and your courage.
You’ve already proven that you have what it takes to succeed. Now it’s time to build the career – and the legacy – you deserve.
So step into your role as the hero you were meant to be. Let’s continue to push boundaries, raise standards, and inspire others to follow in our footsteps. Your future is waiting. Let’s make it extraordinary.
